What Does "Meeting You Where You Are" Actually Mean?

If you've been at Core for any length of time, you've probably heard us say that we want to "meet you where you are."

It's one of our core philosophies.

But what does that actually mean?

Meeting you where you are doesn't mean lowering our expectations.

It means choosing the right starting point.

Every person who walks through our doors is different.

Some have exercised for decades. Others are stepping into a gym for the first time.

Some have old knee injuries. Others have shoulder pain or a history of back problems.

Some want to play better golf. Others want to hike with their family, keep up with their grandkids, improve their pickleball game, or simply feel stronger getting through everyday life.

Trying to give all of those people the exact same workout doesn't make sense.

The destination may be similar. The path there is different.

That's why we individualize our programming.

Take something as simple as a squat.

One person might be perfectly comfortable with a barbell back squat.

Another might do better with a goblet squat.

Someone else may use a box squat, a squat holding TRX straps for support and balance, and another person might start with a sit-to-stand from a bench.

They're all squatting.

They're all training the same movement pattern.

They're simply doing it in the way that's most appropriate for their body today.

The same goes for almost every exercise we prescribe.

If overhead pressing bothers your shoulder, we'll find a pressing variation that doesn't.

If traditional deadlifts don't agree with your back, we'll find a hip hinge pattern that works for you without pain and coach you on how to do it most efficiently.

If lunges bother your knees, we don't throw out single-leg training altogether. We simply find another way to train single leg in a way that doesn't cause pain.

We don't abandon movement patterns because one exercise isn't right for you.

We adjust the exercise.

Because every exercise has a purpose.

The goal isn't to force everyone into the same mold.

The goal is to create the adaptation we're looking for.

That's what good coaching does.

Sometimes meeting you where you are also means adjusting for life outside the gym.

Maybe work has been unusually stressful.

Maybe you've been traveling.

Maybe you're not sleeping well because of a newborn at home.

Maybe you've been battling an illness.

Those things matter.

Your body doesn't distinguish between stress that comes from a workout versus stress from your job, poor sleep, or something happening at home.

Stress is stress.

So sometimes meeting you where you are means reducing the load, pulling back the volume, or making today's workout a little simpler than originally planned.

Not because you're weak.

Because that's what your body needs to keep moving forward.

That's one of the biggest misconceptions about individualized coaching.

Modifying an exercise or adjusting a workout isn't taking the easy way out.

It's taking the smart way forward.

The goal has never been to complete a specific exercise.

The goal is to help you become stronger, healthier, and move better.

Sometimes that means progressing an exercise.

Sometimes it means regressing one.

Sometimes it means staying exactly where you are until you've earned the next step.

That's progress.

Meeting you where you are means understanding your starting point so we can help you get somewhere better.

We're always working toward something.

More strength.

Better movement.

Less pain.

More confidence.

Greater resilience.

A healthier, more capable body.

And that journey looks different for everyone.

At Core, we don't believe in one perfect program.

We believe in the right program for the right person at the right time.

That's what meeting you where you are really means.

And that's how lasting progress is made.
