Seven Years Later at Core

I recently wrote a newsletter about March being a month that always makes me reflect.

It's the month that Eric and I officially took over at Core, which was 4 years ago now.

Also, I’m just a few months away from being at Core for 7 years.

It’s hard to believe it’s been that long already. At the same time, when I really stop and think about everything that’s happened over those 7 years, it also feels like a long time. A lot has changed. A lot has happened. And it’s made me reflect a bit on my time here.

When I first started at Core, I was drawn to the training. I liked the format. I believed in the semi-private model. I was excited about the functional approach and the idea of helping people move and feel better in their everyday lives. I also liked that the coaches collaborated and worked together. It felt like a place where I could learn and grow.

And all of that is still true.

But what really stood out to me over time, and what continues to stand out, is the people.

The community.

Yes, the programs matter. The coaching matters. That’s what we do, and we take a lot of pride in it. But that’s not the only reason people stay.

I’ve always been impressed by how many members we have who have been here for 5, 10, even 20 years. That’s not normal. That doesn’t happen just because of a good workout.

There’s something different about this place.

And I think it’s a combination of things.

From a programming standpoint, I believe we get great results. Unlike some gyms, our goal isn’t just to make you sweaty and tired. Our goal is to help you move and feel better outside of the gym. And that’s what leads to longevity.

But perhaps even more importantly, it’s the environment. It’s a place where people actually take the time to get to know one another. Where people are thoughtful and supportive. Where you can work hard, but also laugh, joke around, and enjoy being here. Where it doesn’t feel like you’re just coming in, getting a workout done, and leaving.

That doesn’t happen everywhere. And that’s a credit to all of our members.

The way they support each other, the way they show up, the way they contribute to the environment, that’s what has made Core what it is. It’s what’s kept people here for years. And it’s what makes us, as coaches, excited to come in every day.

At the end of the day, it's the small moments that make showing up each week something people genuinely look forward to.

That kind of community isn’t something you can manufacture. It grows over time through the people who choose to be part of it.

And after reflecting on the last seven years, that’s the part of Core I’m most grateful for.
