When we design your program at Core, we’re not just choosing exercises or specific muscle groups. We’re choosing patterns.
Movement patterns are the foundation of functional strength. They’re how your body is designed to move in real life, whether you’re lifting groceries, climbing stairs, getting up from the floor, shoveling snow, golfing, or playing with your kids.
That’s why we build every program around the same six foundational patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull, lunge (single-leg), and carry.
They give you a balanced, strong, capable body, not just in the gym, but everywhere else that matters.
Here’s what each one does, why it matters, and how we train it.
1. The Squat Pattern
The squat is one of the most fundamental movement patterns your body performs. It's the foundation for lower-body strength and one of the first movement patterns we teach because it carries over to nearly everything you do.
What it trains:
Lower-body strength
Force production
Core stability
Hip and ankle mobility
Coordination and control
Why it matters: Strong squat mechanics make everyday life easier, from standing up out of a chair and getting off the floor to climbing stairs and lifting objects safely. They also build the foundation for producing force through the ground, making you stronger, more explosive, and more powerful in activities like jumping, sprinting, and changing direction.
Examples: Air squat, goblet squat, front squat, box squat, wall sits, and more.
2. The Hinge Pattern
The hinge is all about moving at the hips, not the spine. It’s how you pick things up from the ground, lift a laundry basket, hinge in your golf swing, shovel snow, or start a sprint or jump.
What it trains:
Posterior chain strength (glutes, hamstrings, back)
Hip power
Core stability
Proper spine position and mechanics
Explosive force production
Why it matters: A strong hinge teaches you to use your hips instead of your lower back. It builds one of the most important muscle groups for both athletic performance and everyday life, protects your spine and low back, and improves your ability to sprint, jump, swing a golf club, and produce explosive power.
Examples: Deadlifts, trap bar deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, kettlebell swings, glute bridges, hip thrusts, and more.
3. The Push Pattern
The push pattern is how your body produces force to move objects, or yourself, away from one another. It develops the strength, stability, and coordination needed for countless movements both in and out of the gym.
What it trains:
Upper-body strength
Shoulder stability
Core control
Vertical and horizontal force production
Healthy pressing mechanics
Why it matters: Push strength allows you to confidently perform everyday tasks like pushing open heavy doors, placing luggage overhead, or getting yourself up off the floor. It also develops upper-body strength and power, helping you throw, punch, press, and produce force more effectively while maintaining healthy shoulder function.
Examples: Push-ups, dumbbell bench press, overhead press, landmine press, barbell bench press, incline press, and more.
4. The Pull Pattern
Pulling is just as important as pushing, yet it's often overlooked in everyday life. Every time you pull something toward you, whether its an exercise in the gym or in life, you're applying this movement pattern.
What it trains:
Upper-back strength
Grip strength
Shoulder stability
Postural endurance
Rotational power and control
Why it matters: Pulling strengthens the muscles that support your shoulders and spine, helping counteract the effects of sitting, driving, and screen time. These exercises are critical in supporting good posture and positions. It also creates a stronger, more stable upper body that improves pulling power, rotational strength, grip, and overall athletic performance.
Examples: TRX rows, dumbbell rows, lat pulldowns, cable rows, face pulls, band pull aparts, and more.
5. Lunge / Single-Leg Pattern
Very few things in life happen with both feet planted evenly on the ground. Walking, climbing stairs, running, and changing direction all require your body to move and stabilize one leg at a time.
What it trains:
Single-leg strength
Balance and coordination
Hip stability
Force absorption and production
Movement symmetry
Why it matters: Life happens one leg at a time. Walking, climbing stairs, changing direction, and maintaining balance all rely on single-leg strength. Training this pattern improves stability, coordination, and balance while developing the strength, control, and force production needed to accelerate, decelerate, cut, jump, and perform explosively while also address imbalances and asymmetry.
Examples: Lunges, split squats, step-ups, single-leg RDLs, lateral lunges, and more.
6. The Carry Pattern
Carries are one of the simplest, and most functional, movement patterns you can train. Anytime you're moving while supporting a load, whether it's groceries, luggage, your kids, or a heavy object, you're using a carry pattern.
What it trains:
Grip strength
Core stability
Whole-body coordination and motor control
Trunk stiffness
Work capacity
Why it matters: Carries teach your body to stay strong and stable while moving under load, building "real life strength" and improving posture. They also develop grip strength, trunk stiffness, and total-body coordination, allowing you to transfer force more efficiently during athletic movements while improving work capacity and resilience.
Examples: Farmer carries, suitcase carries, rack carries, overhead carries, sandbag holds, and more.
Why We Use All Six Patterns in Every Program
Most people don’t need random exercises, complicated routines, or trendy workouts. They need balanced programming that trains the body the way it’s meant to move.
At Core, we hammer the basics and do them with consistency and thoughtful progression to make progress.
