Where are Toxins Hiding in your Home?

In part 1 of this series we discussed why reducing toxins in our environment is so important! This chapter will explore WHERE these toxins are found in our home.

Now I’m no expert on the subject but I have been reducing toxins in my life for the last 5 years and have learned a lot. I also link a lot of articles out to other sources that I encourage you to read! Please do more research on your own too- there’s so much good information out there that can help us sift through all the questions.

The point of this article isn’t to scare you about all the toxins lurking around you in your home, but rather bring up a few questions or ideas that you may not have ever thought about. The quality of our air, water, food and surroundings can either inhibit or contribute to long term health! I hope to show you ways you can IMPROVE your health by improving the quality of your home environment.



We take 20,000 breaths each day, which makes the air we breathe so important! What are you breathing? While we can’t control all of the air around us, we can control the air quality of our homes. Some common pollutants include radon, chemical cleaning products, furniture, mattresses, wall paint, carpet, and air “fresheners”.


Drinking Water: We all know how important adequate water is to our health. We are also very lucky to have easy access to healthy water- we literally just turn on the faucet. Unfortunately, there can be junk lurking in our tap water. For example, fluoride might be good for our teeth, but is it good for our whole body? Chlorine works great as a disinfectant, but is it good for us to consume?

Shower Water: The water we bathe in is just as important as the water we drink! Our skin absorbs chlorine and other irritants in our water. Whenever I shower without a chlorine filter I notice a big difference in my hair and skin. Learn more here.


Did you know that our skin absorbs whatever we place on it? So next time you want to put something on your skin as yourself… would I eat this? If it’s not safe to eat, it’s not safe to put on your skin! Be mindful of the ingredients in your makeup, soap, shampoo/conditioner, laundry detergent and clothing. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!


Electropollution is everywhere! Our world is consistently becoming more and more “plugged in” and there are side effects to this cultural shift! Smart phones, tablets and computers are best kept AWAY from our bodies as much as possible. Men, I’d rethink keeping your phone in your pocket if I were you! Same to ladies who wear their phone in their bra… not sure how that fashion trend started but it’s not cute and it’s definitely not safe!


“You are what you eat” but also… “You are what you eat, eats!” Chemicals, pesticides, preservatives and hormones that are found in our produce, meat, dairy and packaged groceries all wind up inside of us. You don’t have to spend a fortune to eat well. Utilize farmer’s markets, CSA programs, local farmers and countless online resources to help you avoid all the junk food out there! Eat food that will nourish you and support a healthy body so you are able to fight off illnesses and disease.


Anger, Jealousy, Bitterness & Refusal to Forgive: This might be the toughest toxin to eliminate of them all! Emotional toxins can be just as deadly to our systems as all the other chemical and environmental examples listed above. If your house is chemical-free, you’re eating clean and using clean body care products, but you’re still holding onto grudges, sitting in your pride and fueling yourself with anger- your body may never heal from those toxic emotions.
